Course overview

This workshop is designed to give the learners the skills and knowledge required to be an effective member of a Risk Intervention Team (RIT), whether they are performing the role of the RIT Coordinator or RIT Member.

This training will cover information that is documented within the Custodial Operations Policy and Procedures Section 3.7 – Management of Inmates at risk of Self-Harm or Suicide.

A major emphasis on this training will be making decisions which incorporate the 'Least Restrictive Care' Principle whilst upholding the good order and security of the correctional environment.

Course outcomes

At the end of this workshop learners will be able to:

  • Obtain information required to assist in the determination, nature and degree of risk
  • Analyse information obtained from various sources for the purpose of managing at risk inmates
  • Make management decisions that adhere to the 'Least Restrictive Care' Principle
  • Complete Part 1,2,3 and 4 of the Mandatory Notification Form
  • Perform as an effective member of a Risk Intervention Team.

Entry requirements

Open to all staff who work in a Correctional Centre and are required to participate in a RIT.

Delivery mode

Blended – Face to Face, in class assessments followed by online assessment completion.

Learner commitment

This workshop will require completion of the following;

  • Face to face / Virtual attendance (2 days)
  • Assessment portfolio to be completed within 12 weeks of completing the workshop

Assessment

Learners will be assessed via:

  • In class assessment portfolio
  • Self-paced assessment portfolio

Award

On successful completion of all training and assessment learners will be issued a Statement of Attainment in CSCINT010 Assess offender risks and needs, CSCOFM035 Protect the safety and welfare of vulnerable offenders and CHCCCS014 Provide brief interventions. These units are issued in partial completion of the CSC40122 Certificate IV in Correctional Practice.
