Corrective Services NSW

Disability support

Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) is strongly committed to inclusion and the protection of the rights of people with disability.

We work actively to ensure these rights are understood and respected.

We have developed a range of resources and information for people with disability to ensure our services are inclusive.

CSNSW Disability Framework

We have developed the CSNSW Disability Framework (PDF, 202.1 KB) to formalise and promote our commitment to people with disability, both in custody and on community supervision orders.

The framework is an important platform to highlight the barriers and needs experienced by one of our most marginalised groups of people; those who sit at the intersection of disability and the criminal justice system.

Our disability framework identifies the important work being done by Statewide Disability Services (SDS) and CSNSW for people with disability on orders, and promotes our goals and vision moving forward.

The framework is centred on the key principles of:

  • access & inclusion
  • person-centred
  • dignity & respect
  • non-discrimination
  • equity
  • safety.

Using these guiding principles, the framework is designed to be used as a platform to create further initiatives that benefit the rights and outcomes of people with disability on orders.

Disability Inclusion Action Plan

The NSW Department of Communities & Justice (DCJ) has created a Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) to help improve the way we deliver mainstream inclusive services to people with disability and to ensure that we excel in our employment practices.

Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2020 – 2024

In November 2020, DCJ released the Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2020 – 2024. It provides a framework for creating positive change for our staff and service users with disability, over the next four years.

So that we can best respond to new challenges and opportunities as they arise during that time, it’s a fully digital plan, centred on two key initiatives: Action for Inclusion projects and ongoing consultation.

Projects will be led by divisions and branches, with consultation and oversight from our DIAP project team and a Senior Executive Governance Group, reporting directly to the DCJ board.

To learn more, head to the DIAP web hub on the DCJ public website.

The Capacity Toolkit

Created by DCJ, the Capacity Toolkit is a guide to assessing a person's capacity to make legal, financial, medical and personal decisions for themselves.

Find out more about empowering people with decision-making disabilities to make their own decisions using the self-paced Decision-making & Capacity E-Learning module. Based on The Capacity Toolkit, the module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
