Metropolitan Remand & Reception Centre (MRRC at Silverwater)

The Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC) is a maximum-security correctional facility for male offenders.

The MRRC is one of 3 correctional facilities that make up the Silverwater Correctional Complex. Also located on site are Silverwater Women's and Dawn De Loas correctional centres.

Inmates who arrive at the MRRC:

• come directly from court on remand
• are staying at the MRRC while they attend court in the Sydney metropolitan area (before returning to their home centre)
• are staying at the MRRC while they wait for a vacancy at a centre that matches their classification.
  

Most inmates at the MRRC leave the centre within a few months of their arrival. Usually this occurs because they obtain bail (and release) or because they transfer to a centre that matches their classification.

How to get there

Public transport

The closest bus stop is on Holker St (near Avenue of Africa) in Silverwater.

Private transport

Visitor parking is very limited. Allow plenty of additional time to find parking.

Visitor information

The MRRC recognises that visits are important to maintain strong family relationships and make it easier for inmates to readjust to life in the community when they are released. 

Families, friends and community members can arrange video appointments or in-person visits with inmates.

Bookings with family and friends

To have a video appointment or in-person visit with a friend or family member in custody, book using the JUST Connect system.  

Before you make your first booking, you will need to:

1. get a Visitor Index Number (VIN)
2. register for JUST Connect.

1. Get a VIN

To find out what your VIN is, or if this is your first time visiting an inmate, email mrrc-visitsprocessing@dcj.nsw.gov.au with the following information:

• your full name and date of birth
• the inmate’s Master Index Number (MIN) and full name
• a copy of your photo ID for verification purposes.

2. Register for JUST Connect

Complete the JUST Connect Application Form to get a JUST Connect account.

Making a booking

Once you have a JUST Connect account, you will be emailed instructions for logging into the JUST Connect system to make a video or in-person booking.  

JUST Connect online bookings are open from Monday 12:15am and close Wednesday 12:00pm. 

You can also make a booking by calling (02) 9289 5200 on:

• Monday and Tuesday, 7:00am to 3:00pm; or 
• Wednesday, 7:00am to 12:00pm.

Any changes to your bookings must be made by Wednesday 12:00pm.

Visit times for family and friends

Before travelling for a visit, call the MRRC to confirm the visit. 

MRRC in-person and video/tablet visits for family and friends are between the hours of 8:00am to 1:15pm on the following days:

• Thursday
• Friday
• Saturday 
• Sunday. 

Visit restrictions

Sentenced inmates are allowed to have 1 in-person or family visit per week, subject to availability. 

Unsentenced inmates are allowed to have 2 in-person or family tablet visits per week, subject to availability.

Rules for video visits

You must follow the rules for video visits with an inmate, as listed on JUST Connect for family and friends. If a family member, friend or inmate breaches any of these rules the video visit may be terminated.

Legal and professional visits

Legal practitioners and professional visitors must book all in-person and audio-visual visits. Send your booking request to MRRClegal@dcj.nsw.gov.au.

• In-person visits: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 2:00pm
• Professional Audio-Visual Link (AVL) visits: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm

Please note: As per CSNSW Custodial Operations Policy and Procedures, agency representatives and professionals (of non-legal nature, e.g. support coordinators, NDIS workers etc) may visit an inmate for the purposes of an assessment or consultation.

A single visit may be approved, all future visitations will be facilitated via AVL.

These visitors will contact the correctional centre directly and seek approval to meet with the inmate, stating the reasons for the meeting. The visitor must produce personal identification and proof of their status as an agency representative or professional.

If regular visitations are required to be conducted by support workers or other professionals, the correct procedure to follow is to become a CSNSW Authorized Visitor. Once an Authorised Visitor status is affirmed, no further approvals are needed to enter any NSW Correctional Facility. Please contact MRRClegal@dcj.nsw.gov.au for more information and instructions.

Confirming a legal or professional visit

You will receive an email or SMS text that confirms your booking and visiting time. For legal visits, please call the centre on (02) 9289 5600 on the morning of your visit to ensure the centre is still able to facilitate the legal visit.

Depositing money to an inmate

If you are a friend or family member who wants to deposit money to an inmate, you must:

• have a CSNSW Depositor Reference Report - unique to each depositor for a particular inmate
• be over 18 years old.

Your CSNSW Depositor Reference Report contains your personalised Customer Reference Number (CRN) for making deposits to a particular inmate for BPAY and Australia Post. The report also has the BPAY biller code for CSNSW.

To get a CSNSW Depositor Reference Report, complete the MRRC Customer Reference Number (CRN) application form (PDF, 210.2 KB) (PDF, 210KB) and email it to MRRCfinance@dcj.nsw.gov.au.

Conditions of entry

Appropriate dress standards

The visits area is a family environment. You must dress appropriately. This generally means clothes must be respectable and not too provocative.

You cannot wear anything that hides your face, except for religious reasons. In that case you will be asked to remove your face covering temporarily so staff can verify your identity.

Inappropriate dress (PDF, 419.1 KB) includes:

• Clothes that have possibly controversial logos, words or slogans such as:
  • Motorcycle gang 'colours' or gang insignias
  • Logos or symbols associated with drugs or drug paraphernalia or swear words
• Tight or revealing clothing including:
  • Tops and dresses that expose the stomach or chest
  • Low-cut, backless, sleeveless, or strapless shirts and singlets
  • Swimsuits or skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh
  • Mesh or other "see-through" clothes
  • Clothes that are excessively dirty, ripped or frayed
• Heels higher than 5 centimetres
• Any jewellery other than a plain wedding band, sleepers and studs. This means no engagement ring or any other ring with stones, and no bracelets or necklaces
• Tops or jumpers with a hood
• Hats, scarves or head coverings (excluding religious wear)
• Hair scrunchies or clips. Only single elasticated hair ties are allowed
• Watches, smart watches or activity trackers
• Bare feet.

For your safety, enclosed shoes must be worn when visiting the MRRC.

• risks to self, e.g. thoughts of self-harm, thoughts of suicide

• acute medical concerns, e.g. heart attack.
