Silverwater Correctional Complex upgrade – managing contamination

Silverwater has been an industrial area for many years, and part of the Metropolitan Remand & Reception Centre (MRRC) site was previously used as a landfill. A number of contaminants are known or suspected to be present beneath the land we’re building on.

As we work to upgrade the MRRC, the safety of workers, inmates and the general public is our highest priority.

Many developments in Sydney have been built safely on former industrial land, including the original MRRC complex in 1997. Lendlease and Corrective Services NSW have implemented a number of measures to ensure that hazardous materials are managed safely on this project. These include:

  • dust control, including water spraying, shade cloths on perimeter fences and covers on trucks carrying material off site
  • extensive site testing and investigation
  • continuous monitoring by a licenced occupational hygienist during excavation work
  • strict protocols for dealing with any unexpected finds
  • external oversight by an independent auditor.

Lendlease has extensive experience working safely on contaminated sites, including the International Towers at Barangaroo and the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour.
