As part of its commitment to Better Prisons, the NSW Government has upgraded the Bathurst Correctional Centre to provide extra accommodation for male inmates.

Bathurst Correctional Centre has been in operation since June 1888.

The Bathurst Correctional Centre upgrade project complements the existing 660-bed medium- and minimum-security sections for male inmates, by providing a new 220-bed maximum-security facility on the southern part of the site. Additional construction included a new gatehouse, reception and visits areas, administration building, and a car park for staff and visitors.

The new gatehouse will service both the maximum- and medium-security sections. The historic 1888 gatehouse has been decommissioned and preserved as a local landmark.

The upgraded facilities were commissioned by the Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections in September 2020.
