Acute Crisis Management Unit
The Acute Crisis Management Unit (ACMU) sits within the Specific Needs cluster, Corrective Services NSW. The ACMU provides a specialised short-term referral option for male offenders who are assessed as an acute risk of harm to themselves, and this risk cannot be managed at their local centre.
Roles within the ACMU
The Senior Psychologist role in the ACMU provides clinical expertise in the review of referrals and recommendations regarding admissions to the ACMU, as part of a multidisciplinary team including Senior Custodial Management, Custodial Officers and Justice Health staff.
Psychology services within the ACMU operate within this multi-disciplinary model. Roles within the ACMU currently include:
- Senior Psychologist
- Senior Correctional Officer / Correctional Officers
- Functional Manager
The wider multi-disciplinary team supporting the ACMU can include:
- Justice Health
- Personality and Behavioural Disorders Service (PBDS)
- Statewide Disability Services (SDS)
- Mental Health Screening Unit (MHSU)
- Services and Programs Officers
- Education Officers
- Case Management Officers
Services Provided by ACMU Psychology
The ACMU psychology services provide:
- Triage of referrals, and recommendations either for suitability for admission into the ACMU or for management in their current centre.
- Ongoing review and comprehensive assessments of ACMU inmates.
- Tailored intervention (both individual and group treatment where appropriate),
- Expert input and consultation for case management and progression planning.
Eligibility Criteria for ACMU Admission
The ACMU accepts referrals for male offenders who, despite extensive local intervention, continue to be assessed at an acute risk of harm to themselves.
Acute mentally ill offenders are alternatively managed through the Mental Health Screening Unit or Long Bay Hospital.
Additional Information
The ACMU is located within the Long Bay Correctional Complex. It is a state-wide service and accepts referrals from all NSW prison locations.
