Corrective Services NSW

West Dapto Road, Kembla Grange

Corrective Services NSW conducted a detailed site investigation on land at West Dapto Road, Kembla Grange, in 2018. The land, bounded by the Illawarra Railway Line in the east and Paynes Road in the west, is roughly 2.5 square kilometres in size and is currently a mix of riparian woodland and open pasture.

Studies commissioned as part of this investigation found that while roughly half of the land is suitable, the lack of a single large developable area would make a prison at this site prohibitively expensive to build.

As a result, this site has been excluded as a potential location for a correctional centre.

Community consultation

During 2018, CSNSW worked with Wollongong City Council, the local community and other stakeholders to assess the suitability of this site. Members of the community were invited to provide feedback via a range of channels including:

  • attending one of four community feedback events
  • completing a survey
  • calling the 'New Prisons' 1800 number
  • sending us an email.

Between April and September 2018, more than 300 members of the Illawarra community got in touch with us regarding the site investigation. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their concerns and provide feedback.
